Welcome to Swan Lake!
Nestled in the heart of the Pembina Valley, Swan Lake is a peaceful rural community where the spirit of the prairies meets a deep sense of connection, culture, and community. As part of the Municipality of Lorne, this picturesque local urban district is home to just under 300 residents and offers an impressive range of amenities for a town of its size.
Swan Lake features a modern arena and curling rink, a ball diamond, and a well-serviced campground. The community enjoys full municipal services, including water and sewer, snow removal, garbage collection, and recycling. A new community hall, built in 2025, serves as a vibrant social hub, hosting events and gatherings throughout the year.
Healthcare is provided through the Southern Health-Santé Sud, which operates a diagnostic lab, a primary care clinic staffed by nurse practitioners and physicians, and ambulance and paramedic services. Fire protection is delivered by the Lorne Fire Department located right in Swan Lake. Residents also benefit from a private Wellness Centre offering physiotherapy services. For outdoor enthusiasts, a scenic one-kilometre walking path has been developed along a former railway bed.
A Thriving Local Economy and Services
Swan Lake is home to a variety of essential businesses that meet most daily needs. Local tradespeople provide plumbing, electrical, construction, and metal fabrication services, while broader goods and services can be found in nearby regional hubs.
The community supports a high quality of life for residents of all ages. Families benefit from a local K–8 school and daycare, while retirees enjoy a modern four-unit 55-plus complex, a multi-suite manor, and a welcoming Friendship Centre. Religious services are available within the town or in nearby communities.
Nature, Culture, and Community
Just a short distance from the village lies Swan Lake — a natural body of water known for its wetlands, shallow shoreline, and abundant biodiversity. The lake not only provides a beautiful backdrop for the area but also supports recreational activities such as fishing and birdwatching, while playing an important role in regional water management and agriculture.
To the west of the village, at the junction of Highways 23 and 34, is Swan Lake First Nation (SLFN) — a proud Anishinaabe Ojibway community and signatory to Treaty 1. SLFN contributes significantly to the cultural, social, and economic fabric of the region.
Agriculture remains at the heart of life in Swan Lake. The area’s rich prairie soil, flat terrain, and favourable climate support a wide range of crop and livestock operations, shaping both the economy and identity of the region.
A Community Rooted in Resilience and Pride
Together, the town of Swan Lake, Swan Lake First Nation, and the lake itself create a dynamic landscape where history, nature, and community values come together. Whether you’re exploring local trails, meeting friendly residents, or learning about Indigenous leadership, Swan Lake offers an experience grounded in resilience, respect, and shared pride of place.
